For the Cake Batter

  • Sugar 235g
  • Butter 250g
  • Eggs 4
  • Milk 1/4 cup
  • Vanilla essence 1 tsp
  • Baking powder 3 tsp
  • Salt 1/8 tsp

For the Frosting

  • Butter 300g
  • Icing sugar 4 cups
  • Vanilla essence 1 tsp
  • Water (cold) 2-3 tbsp

Tools Required

  • 8-inch round baking pan
  • Baking paper
  • Measuring cups
  • Spatula
  • Electric mixer or whisk
  • Mixing bowl
  • Disposable piping bag
  • Star shaped piping tip 1m
  • Cake stand or platter

Making the Batter

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

  1. Cream the butter and the sugar in a large bowl using a hand mixer or a whisk.
  2. Once the butter and the sugar are light in colour and fluffy in texture, add the eggs.
  3. Make sure to add the eggs one by one. For ease, crack the eggs into a separate container before adding them one by one into the butter-sugar mixture.
  4. After the eggs are well mixed into the batter, gently sift in the flour. Mix in the baking powder, salt, vanilla essence, and milk along with the flour.
  5. Then mix till there are no lumps and the batter is smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into an 8-inch round cake pan lined with baking paper and greased with butter.
  7. Bake at 350 F for 40 to 45 minutes.
  8. In order to check if the cake is cooked fully, insert a thin skewer down the center.
  9. If the skewer comes out clean, the cake is cooked. However, if some batter sticks to the skewer, leave the cake in the oven for a couple of minutes more.
  10. Remove the cake from the pan and let it cook completely on a wire rack.

Icing the Cake

  1. Mix the butter, sugar, vanilla essence, and cold water to make the icing until it forms a smooth frosting.
  2. Gently slice the cake into two halves and generously spread buttercream frosting.
  3. After evenly spreading the frosting, place the second half of the cake on top.
  4. In case the top of the cake is rounded, trim off the excess for a flatter surface.
  5. Using a spatula, spread some buttercream frosting all over the cake. This is only the crumb coat.
  6. Make sure to cover the whole cake with a thin layer of frosting.
  7. After the crumb coat is complete, take a generous amount of frosting and smooth it over the cake, ensuring that the sides and the top are even with smooth edges.
  8. Let the cake chill in the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes.
  9. After the icing is set, pipe the rosettes.
  10. Fill the piping bag with the remaining buttercream frosting.
  11. In a circular motion, pipe rosettes all over the cake, starting with the edges and moving to the centre.
